Andy Shaw, completing his first year as an assistant basketball coach at Allen Community College, was handed the reins of the men’s basketball squad Thursday.

Shaw was hired by ACC trustees at their regular meeting Monday. He will teach psychology in addition to his coaching duties.

Shaw replaces Anwar Perry, who resigned in March after two years at Allen, compiling a 19-45 record.

Shaw was a member of the Oklahoma State University basketball team for two seasons and served as a student assistant and graduate assistant for the Cowboy staff while working on his master’s degree.

He played high school basketball at Santa Fe High School in Edmond, Okla.

In other personnel matters, trustees approved a contract for Nichole Schlesener as an administrative assistant for Dean of Online Learning Regena Aye.

Trustees also accepted the resignation of Bryce Johnson, an assistant track and cross country coach.

CYNTHIA PETERS, Blue Springs, Mo., has been tapped as Allen’s distinguished alumnus for 2012.

Peters, Class of 1975, will deliver the keynote address at ACC’s commencement ceremony May 12.

She is the director of cardiovascular nursing at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Blue Springs, Mo.

In a February 2010 issue of Ingram’s Magazine, Peters credits an ACC professor, Bob Barclay, for recruiting her into nursing.

Peters also is mother of ACC’s head volleyball coach and assistant athletic director Jessica Peters.

ALLEN’S Student Senate has an assortment of activities aimed at keeping students away from tobacco products April 30.

The students, with an assist from the Iola Police Department and Anna Catterson’s computer science classes, will set up booths in the ACC fish pond showing the dangers of smoking and using smokeless tobacco.

T-shirts also will be given away, as will other flyers.
